Waterco achieves two vital patents
European patent for MultiCyclone, Australian patent for pool pump secondary seal

Waterco Ltd has been granted two sought-after patents – a European patent for its multi award-winning MultiCyclone system and an Australian patent for the secondary seal on its Aquamite, Supastream and Supatuf Pool Pumps.

Group marketing director of Waterco, Bryan Goh, calls the granting of both patents in November "a significant milestone."

"We're committed to innovating, and these patents protect our innovations – which is important in such a competitive environment."

MultiCyclone

The granting of the European patent for the MultiCyclone is a major achievement, says Goh.

"Nothing has been more revolutionary in the swimming pool filtration market since the MultiCyclone was introduced," he says.

"Since its launch four years ago, the MultiCyclone has continued to grow in popularity – and the types of industries which are using the system have continued to diversify. It is now being used in both the domestic and commercial markets, and by swimming pool, water treatment and aquaculture industries.

"And with hotel and leisure chains being put under pressure by local government authorities to install environmentally-friendly products, which help reduce running costs and conserve water, the commercial use of the MultiCyclone continues to grow."

In developing the unique MultiCyclone system, Waterco has set the bar high – and created a unique category. Waterco has continued to innovate and invest in different versions of the MultiCyclone. In 2010 it released the MultiCyclone Plus and MultiCyclone Ultra, a compact all-in-one pre-filtration / filtration system which can be mounted atop a pool pump. Additionally, high pressure-rated units have been developed for the water treatment market, and a large commercial-sized MultiCyclone is being developed for commercial swimming pools.

"We won't be resting on our laurels, and will continue to evolve the MultiCyclone to suit the myriad markets which are using this ground-breaking system," Goh adds.

Secondary seal

Also in November, an Australian patent was granted for Waterco's innovative secondary seal, which has already been patented in the US and Europe.

Situated between the pump wet end and the pump motor, a mechanical seal forms a seal around the motor shaft to prevent water from running out along the shaft of a motor. The mechanical seal is the wearing part of any pool pump, and it may leak water if the pump is ever run dry or simply worn out.

"The pump's motor is the most expensive component, which is why the secondary seal is so important. It prevents the small cost of replacing a mechanical seal escalating to the major expense of replacing the motor," Goh explains.

"For retailers, it gives them the reassurance they can offer their customers a pump with longevity."

euandau_2Waterco's secondary seal protects the pump motor's end shield from any water contact, by capturing any leaks through a worn out mechanical seal and draining it out of the pump. This provides an additional layer of protection to the mechanical seal, which is the wearing part of any pool pump. The Secondary Seal is a key component of Waterco's Aquamite, Supastream and Supatuf pool pumps.

"By capturing any water from a leaking mechanical seal and preventing it from reaching the motor saves the pool owner from a very expensive replacement cost," Goh explains.

"Achieving this patent for the secondary seal provides Waterco pumps with a unique point of difference not only in Australia, but also internationally."
